Cross Country Development Team

The Cross Country Development Team is designed for athletes who are ready to build on foundational skills with increased training structure and consistency, while continuing to develop toward higher levels of competition. This program provides a balanced approach to technical development, endurance training, and race exposure.

Athletes refine both skate and classic techniques through structured workouts, drills, and repetition. At this stage, there is a stronger emphasis on aerobic development, pacing, and training habits that support long-term performance. Athletes begin to take greater ownership of their progression while continuing to train in a supportive team environment.

The Development Team serves as a key step in the SSCV Nordic pathway, preparing athletes for advancement into the Cross Country Competition Team.

Volunteer Requirements

Points Required: 160

SSCV relies heavily upon the generosity of hundreds of volunteers who give thousands of hours to help with competitions, fundraising and various Club tasks and events. Volunteer points are earned by completing volunteer jobs, and these jobs are assigned a specific number of points based upon difficulty and time needed for completion. SSCV requires each family to complete a predetermined amount of volunteering based upon the programs in which they are involved. The number of points required per family is based upon the athlete’s program (and in the case of multiple athletes, it will be the program in which the most time-committed athlete participates).

There are numerous opportunities, both on and off the snow, throughout the year from May 1, 2026 – April 30, 2027. Opportunities will be shared with families via email as they arise.

Failure to meet your obligation could result in an evaluation of your family’s fit with the program and SSCV culture of volunteerism.

Facilities + Technical Support

Training takes place primarily at Maloit Park, SSCV’s dedicated Nordic training venue featuring over 10 kilometers of trails designed for both training and racing.

Additional training sessions may take place at the Vail Nordic Center, providing exposure to varied terrain, conditions, and race environments.

Strength Training

At the Development Team level, athletes begin to take a more structured approach to both on-snow and off-snow training. Conditioning focuses on endurance, coordination, and general strength, helping athletes build the physical foundation required for higher-level competition.

Athletes are also introduced to more consistent equipment preparation, including waxing techniques and ski selection, allowing them to better understand how equipment impacts performance in varying conditions.
