Cycling VJC Junior Rollers Program

The Junior Rollers Program is designed for athletes ages 11–14 who are ready to take the next step in their cycling development. Building on the fun and skill-based foundation established in Mini Rollers, this group begins to place a greater emphasis on technical skill development, fitness, and racing opportunities, while still keeping the experience enjoyable and team-focused.

At this stage, athletes start to ride more challenging terrain and develop stronger bike handling skills. Practices include trail rides, skills sessions, interval-based workouts, and race preparation, helping riders grow more confident and capable on the bike. Our goal is to provide a supportive environment where athletes can push themselves, learn new skills, and develop a deeper passion for mountain biking.

Skills and Development

Junior Rollers athletes continue building their technical foundation while progressing toward more advanced riding skills. Coaches work closely with athletes to help them become comfortable on varied terrain and improve their efficiency on the bike.

Key skill areas include:

  • Advanced cornering and descending
  • Climbing technique and pacing
  • Line choice and trail awareness
  • Group riding and race etiquette
  • Bike maintenance basics

As athletes progress through the program, they also begin to develop a better understanding of training principles, effort management, and preparation for competition.

Racing Opportunities

Junior Rollers athletes are encouraged to participate in local racing opportunities, particularly the Vail Recreation District Town Race Series, which provides consistent and fun racing right here in the Vail Valley. These races allow athletes to gain experience with race-day preparation, pacing, and competition, all within a supportive team environment.

Facilities + Technical Support

Training takes place on a variety of terrain throughout the Vail Valley, including local trails, bike paths, and road routes. These environments provide athletes with exposure to diverse riding conditions that support both skill development and endurance training.

Locations are selected to match athlete ability and progression, ensuring a safe and challenging experience.

Strength Training

At the Junior Rollers level, athletes begin to take a more structured approach to training. Off-the-bike development includes strength, coordination, and endurance work to support performance and injury prevention.

Athletes are also introduced to more advanced bike maintenance and equipment knowledge, helping them understand how setup and care impact performance across different riding conditions.
