It was a snowy couple of days for the Rocky Development Series and Rocky Qualifier Series mogul competitions hosted by Ski & Snowboard Club Vail this February 8 and 9. With over 24 inches of fresh snow in a 48 hour period, Vail Resorts and Ski & Snowboard Club Vail staff along with parent volunteers and athletes worked tirelessly to prepare the course on Black Forest for the young mogul athletes. This group effort coupled with some additional powder gave competitors plenty to work with as they tackled the course.
Saturday’s Rocky Qualifier Series Competition:
Sixty-three athletes competed in the Rocky Qualifier Series for athletes ages eleven and older on February 8. Ski & Snowboard Club Vail’s Simon Cope, a seventh grader at Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy, put on an impressive display, coming in second for the day for the boys with big air and major speed. On the girl’s side, Vail’s Mahlia Torres walked away with a sixth place finish, the youngest athlete among the top ten finishers.
Sunday’s Rocky Development Series Competition:
On Sunday, February 9, 77 athletes ages twelve and under took to the course in Rocky Mountain Freestyle’s Rocky Development Series competition. Ski & Snowboard Club Vail’s Elle Keenan came out on top for her age group, adding to a growing pile of wins for the twelve-year-old upstart. Broxdon Dickson of SSCV also had a great day on the hill, finishing second for his age group, followed closely by teammate, Landon Glover, who finished fourth.
Ski & Snowboard Club Vail Head Mogul Development Coach, Brad Kreuz, remarked, “We had some great conditions for competing out there. We could not have pulled off Friday’s training day or the weekend events amidst an epic snowstorm without the help of Vail Resorts, parent volunteers and athletes.”
Last weekend’s mogul competitions were a part of the Rocky Mountain Freestyle series. Rocky Mountain Freestyle produces approximately 25-30 U.S. Ski & Snowboard-sanctioned mogul and dual mogul events each season at major resorts in the Rocky Mountain Qualifier Series and Rocky Development Series.
