Ski & Snowboard Club Vail’s freestyle team was in Aspen this past weekend for the Rocky Mountain Division’s Aspen Valley mogul contest at Aspen Highlands, where contestants combine their mogul skiing skills with aerial skills.

The event on Saturday was a junior mogul contest, and SSCV’s Hunter Bailey, J3 2011 Junior National Champion, ripped the hill to a fourth, while Tess Johnson, a first year J4, skied to a 12th overall and first for the J4 girls.  Johnson, 11 years old and moving up to compete at a higher level, won every development mogul competition she was in last season.

In Sunday’s open mogul competition, Bailey skied to a 5th for the men and Johnson took 11th overall, and first again for the J4 girls.

“For a first year J4, Johnson put in good performances at this contest,” said coach Mike Friedberg.  “ And Bailey stepped it up and is performing at a high level for a first year J3.  Both Bailey and Johnson are progressing well.”

The Ski & Snowboard Club Vail freestyle team will be competing in the Vail Valley Freestyle mogul event this weekend, 1/21 and 1/22.  This is a great opportunity to watch the action on Vail’s Cookshack mogul arena.

“Thanks to Vail Resorts for making snow and using their grooming machines to set up the course on Cookshack,” said Friedberg.  “Without their commitment, we would not have this great bump run for our competition.”
