SSCV alumna Allie Resnick earned her first World Cup slalom start at the only women’s World Cup stop in the United States in Killington, Vermont this past weekend as a result of her outstanding NorAm Cup performance in Copper over the past two weeks.  SSCV alumnus Alex Leever also shined in these early season NorAms, grabbing a silver medal in one of the men’s slalom races and just off the podium in fourth place in the other Copper NorAm slalom before heading off to Europe for more high level racing and training.  These stellar personal bests and top performances by SSCV alumni were topped off with SSCV alumna Mikaela Shiffrin seizing the win at the World Cup slalom in Killington and SSCV alumna Paula Moltzan earning a seventh place finish and second for the US women that same day.  With this 46th World Cup victory at Killington, Shiffrin tied Ingemar Stenmark’s record for most World Cup wins in a single discipline.  Earlier this season SSCV alumnus River Radamus had his best ever World Cup giant slalom sixth place finish in the season opener in Soelden and is sure to be a home town favorite in the upcoming Birds of Prey World Cup men’s races in Beaver Creek.

To take a step back from the highlights of the past two weeks, it is a highly notable athletic accomplishment for an alpine ski racer to even qualify for a North American Cup (NorAm) race, a FIS level series for top racers from the United States and Canada year of birth 2005 and older just below the Europa Cup and World Cup level.  It is an even higher level of accomplishment to be among the top 60 finishers in the first run of a NorAm and “make the flip” to earn a second run.  Imagine then ending up in the top 30 overall racers at a NorAm for your combined two run time, particularly for the “Junior” age athletes (year of birth 2001-2005) who are still in the early stages of their FIS racing career.  There are always those who aspire to a top 10 overall finish, and a spot on the Overall or Junior podium.  And then there is the best of all scenarios-a win.  Based on an outstanding NorAm performance, might an athlete earn a World Cup start ?  The depth of Ski & Snowboard Club Vail athletes and alumni racing in the opening NorAm Cup races in Copper plus the Killington World Cup slalom enabled SSCV to check off all of the above boxes.

“I am so proud of how all of these young SSCV athletes and alumni performed in the early season NorAm Cup races in Copper”, said SSCV Alpine Program Director Brad Wall.  “And the season has just begun!  I look forward to seeing how the season unfolds for all or our athletes as they strive to achieve their personal goals and leave their mark on the 2021-2022 season.  At the US National Team level, SSCV alumni Mikaela Shiffrin, Paula Moltzan and River Radamus are surely an inspiration to all of our young ski racers with their outstanding early season World Cup performances.”
