This past week, high level moguls athletes from across the nation gathered on a national stage in Deer Valley, Utah. SSCV current and former athletes had an impressive showing at the event and grabbed three  podiums and 10 top 15 placements across the two days of competition. SSCV proudly put forward 15 current and former qualifying athletes for this prestigious event.  

US Nationals is a very significant event in the US Freestyle pipeline, and it may be one of the first FIS events that young mogul athletes who qualify for Nationals get to experience. A strong performance in this event may set athletes up to compete at US Selections early in December of the upcoming season, and potentially qualify them for the Noram tour and other FIS events in North America or internationally. The competition consisted of women’s open moguls and men’s open moguls on March 26th, and the women’s duals moguls and men’s dual moguls on March 27th.

On March 26, SSCV athletes were a force to reckon with in the open moguls category.   SSCV former athlete and US Mogul Team member Tess Johnson took first place, as the women’s open mogul champion, and Reese Chapdelaine snagged eighth. For the men, SSCV athletes Garrett Marley landed in fourth, Jameson Kust took sixth, Nash Lucas grabbed 12th and Chase Barros took 13th. 

 

In Sunday’s Dual Event, unheralded Oliver Smith stormed to the win taking down top seed George McQuinn, then 4th seed Jack Petrone, and then knocked off 3rd seeded Charlie Mickel to gain the final.  In the big final, Oliver outlasted Olympic Valley’s Ryan Tam to take the title of National Champion. Teammate Garrett Marley rounded out the top 15. Tess Johnson doubled up as Dual and Single Mogul Champ.  Johnson easily fended off the competition through five rounds of duals. Reese Chapdelaine took 11th.

“SSCV headed to the US Championships with a stacked team who has benefited all season long from strong training at Vail Mountain ,” said Philippe Marquis, SSCV Head FIS Moguls Coach.  “We were well balanced between some veteran skiers who were  ready to perform at the highest level and bring positive leadership as well as young athletes who attended US Championships for the first time and gained a rich experience. For most of us, this was the pinnacle of the season with a great event, good weather, and strong skiing from our team.”

 

“Smith’s win in the final was a real ‘feel good’ moment to cap off US Nationals.  Oliver battled back from a tough singles event and proved he could really ski that course,” said John Dowling, SSCV Mogul Program Director,  “‘Champion’ is regarded as the toughest hill on the FIS stage and it certainly puts all our athletes to the test.  Our top dogs performed well and I thought our young skiers looked good out there, too.”
