Ski & Snowboard Club Vail hosted a Rocky Mountain Freestyle Mogul event on Cookshack this past weekend, on February 6 and 7. After a week of consistent, heavy snowfall Freestyle athletes took advantage of the blue skies and warmer weather to compete against one another on sun-softened bumps. Over fifty competitors participated in Saturday’s event, while Sunday’s competition witnessed over forty-five athletes.
Despite sharing Cookshack’s venue, Saturday’s and Sunday’s events differed in format and the ages of its participants. On Saturday, Freestyle skiers ages 10 and older taking part in the Rocky Qualifier Series competed against one another hoping for a podium finish. The Rocky Qualifier Series, a two-jump timed competition, serves as a stepping-stone for mogul skiers to better prepare themselves for the upper level Rocky Competitive Series. On Sunday, Cookshack hosted a Rocky Development Series event – a Freestyle series for athletes ages twelve and under featuring a one jump, untimed competition.
John Grigsby who heads up the Ski & Snowboard Club Vail Freestyle development program shared, “On Saturday a number of our freestyle athletes moved up from the Devo to the RQS level competition to compete in a two jump course on Cookshack, taking advantage of their one time free move up opportunity for the season. Several top ten finishes were posted among this move up group. A number of these move up athletes competed again on Sunday in the Devo competition, capturing some top 5 podiums.
Grigsby said, “It was great to see a number of top 5 finishes by our athletes on both days. This weekend’s events show great promise for the future of Ski & Snowboard Club Vail’s moguls athletes!”
The next Rocky Mountain Qualifier and Development Freestyle events will take place in mid-February in Steamboat Springs.
