On Monday and Tuesday, the Surefoot Colorado Ski Cup tour came to Copper Mountain for two Super G races.  This new venue at Copper debuted in November as the U. S. Ski Team’s speed training hill, and Ski & Snowboard Club Vail coach Scott Myers likes the track.

“This is a world class venue, and it’s a special addition for the Rocky Mountain Division of USSA,” said Myers.

The competition got underway Monday with the first of two Super G races, and this first race gave the SSCV athletes a chance to dial in their tactics.  Remember, this is a one run speed event where the skiers inspect and then race – no training runs here as in downhill.

Tuesday’s action brought Sweden’s World Cup skier, and Edwards resident, Patrik Jaerbyn to the hill to race.

For the SSCV men’s squad, Sean McCormick took 6th, just 1.22 seconds off the first place finisher Bronson Wright out of Jackson Hole.  Behind McCormick was Colin Hayes moving up from a start of 36 to finish on the first page of results in 14th.

“McCormick had a respectable run,” said coach Ben Babbitt.  “And Hayes had a good day with a great move up the pack, he’s skiing well.”

The girls for SSCV had Erica McCormick, a first year J2 competing in her first FIS race, putting a good run down the hill to finish eighth, moving up from a start of 42.  Montana Marzario, McCormick’s teammate, also showed up to race moving up from a starting position of 53rd to finish 16th.

“McCormick was able to put her tactics together today,” said coach Myers.  “And that allowed her skills to shine.”

As for Marzario, Myers said she is a slalom skier and more practiced with shorter turns, but today she seemed to be learning how to negotiate a faster course.

“Marzario had a great day as well, and she’s starting to figure out the high speed turns,” said Myers

The Surefoot Colorado Ski Cup continues today with giant slalom racing for the men and women at Copper Mountain
