SSCV U12’s RECAP & UPDATE-SENT OUT FEBRUARY 14, 2014 BY BOB ZUCH
Happy Valentines Day!
Thanks for your efforts last weekend: travelling, preparation, and competing! Everyone in our group showed their best in at least one run: Caroline 13th, Elle 14th, Kiana 6th, Quinn 14th, Bella 16th, Nick 10th, Brody 17th, Alexander 16th, and Tyler 9th. Congratulations for improved race results, and first time top 10 results for Kiana, Nick, and Tyler!
This weekend we’ll review some video/photos from the SL races and work to strengthen our weaknesses, and also be aware of our strengths to use as a foundation for further skill improvement. Please review our new video on our athletes’ strengths and weaknesses: https://vimeo.com/86682811. This video emphasizes technique instead of tactics, as everyone in our group needs to improve their technique in order to improve their tactics. For example bending the outside ski earlier in the turn will allow the skier to make a tighter turn, allowing a higher line in the race course.
This weekend we’ll train Fri afternoon (ready to ski by 12:30, GS training), Saturday (ready to ski at 8:30, GS & all mountain skis), and Sunday (group pictures at 8AM, SL and all-mountain skis). Next week we have training for part-time athletes all day Tues, Wed, Thurs, and Fri. This is a great opportunity to get extra practice and training in what will likely be smaller groups. Please refer to the calendar using the link below.
A reminder about early dismissal: we are responsible for our athletes until 4PM every day, and are not allowed to dismiss an athlete early without contact with a parent. So please email, text, or call me (914 393-5727) if your child needs to leave early. I cannot dismiss an athlete just because they tell me they need to leave early. Also I often use the last 30 min. of the day for video review which sets us up for the next day’s training, so this is an important part of the day.
Everyone should have received their midseason review by last week. If you did not receive the review please let me know. If you have not yet met with me to discuss and would like to schedule for this weekend or next please let me know.
Videos and pictures from Sunlight and Aspen are on the share site: https://sscvj5.shutterfly.com/
We’re looking forward to some great skiing and training this weekend and next week!

U12 WEEKLY UPDATE JAN 11th-17th
U12 Part Time and Full Time Parents,
It was a snowy weekend at Crested Butte where myself, Geof and Connor were for the slaloms this weekend. We had some great results in some tough conditions, we are very proud of all the racers. Thanks Bob and Steve for covering Aspen and Luther and Amie for covering Eldora. I believe it was very positive for all the racers to not ski against the same kids they train with or usually race with this past weekend. It was nice to see different athletes in the top 10 at each venue and we are still seeing some great improvements in our athletes skiing each week. I have seen some great results from those venues and congrats to all the racers for some great results and thank you parents for the never ending support in some tough conditions on and off the hill.

Parents….Please talk to me if you have a request to ski with a different group or age group for some reason. Myself, Karen G and the other head coach have to approve any extra training/freeskiing or skiing up opportunities. Do not directly contact any other coach with these requests. This puts a stress on other coaches and athletes, we must follow the correct protocol for these situations. Thanks

Parents thanks for your patience and I am sorry we couldn’t get the timer for the SL time trail working yesterday but it turns out today was much better snow conditions, a working timer and no knee high ruts (which was great training for the kids). We have finished our qualification for the out of division race Feb 22/23rd at the Canyons Utah. Click here for the results from the 5 races and the chart on how the kids were picked. Below is the explanation for how and why we use the ITS qualification system.
The spreadsheet is NOT in ranking order, we did not rank the athletes but used their best performances for each individual race.
Explanation of the International Selection Team Process is below. We use this type of selection in RMD and Nationally for national team, RMD and podium project team selections. This type of selection is used to qualify the racers with the BEST finishes not average of multiple results since we want the kids to race hard and reward the best finishers in each race. All races are weighted the same across the board.
The order of each event is arranged into separate vertical columns, best on top, last on the bottom. The columns are arranged normally from left to right: GS, GS, SL, SL, SQ. Selection is accomplished by taking the top row of names (GS,GS, SL, SL, SQ) then going to the second person in the first column. Continue on across columns. If a name comes up a second (or more times) it is skipped. Always skip across from left to right, not down for repeats.
Congrats to our qualifiers and all the competitors for skiing their hardest.
ALL U12 Full Time and Part Time racers were eligible for qualification.

Little Big Mountain – The little Big Mountain competition is a new event that we created this year for the The Steadman Clinic Vail Cup. The event will take place on “Head First” trail under the gondola next to Pepi’s Face. The athletes will choose a “line” down the trail that they think will impress judges. Part of the score will be to see who is creative with their “line” choice. Head first is a steeper run with variable terrain that includes bumps and a few rocks to jump off. The athletes will also be scored on their technique, control, fluidity, and energy/style. The idea is to see who can ski the best down this run while being scored on those 5 criteria’s. For example : If an athlete shows good turning, pole planting, control of upper body, and gets creative with natural features by jumping off bumps or rocks, they will see positive scoring from judges.
The event will be a lot of fun and different from any other Vail Cup competition. This is a combination of bumps, alpine, and big air all mixed into one awesome run.

U12-SUNLIGHT UPDATE 1-25-14
Hello FT/PT parents,
This is a Sunlight Update…..
It was a great day of SkillsQuest at Sunlight and we owe it all to the kids and coaches for incredible preparation for this event. Our team was far superior to the other team preparation/skills, especially in the GS with pole plant and side slip/edge set. I heard other coaches/athletes/parents talking about our kids and using them as great examples for those drills, I am very proud of your performances today. I have uploaded the Side Slip videos to Sprongo. Thanks to all the U12 coaches who worked with the kids today while Connor and I were 2 of the 4 evaluators since no one else wanted to volunteer to evaluate the kids, tomorrow will be a great day. Awesome Teamwork!
Meet tomorrow/Sunday at 8:15am with boots on outside Sunlight Main Lodge.
Please make sure your athlete has their bib from today.
There are still a couple people that need to pay and turn in waivers at registration in the morning, please do so in the morning.
Please remind the kids that it takes over 30 minutes to ride both lifts to the top of the race course, don’t get caught down in the lodge and miss your run. Please check in with your coach and I will try to assign a parent in the lodge to have a SSCV radio so we can keep everyone on schedule.
7:30-8:30am
Check-In at Sunlight Mountain base lodge

8:30 Lift Load
10:00 am 1st Race AM Women, AM Men
2nd Race Immediately after 1st race is the Women then Men

I hope everyone has thawed from this weekend’s snow, cold and wind. It was a great weekend of racing and I am very proud of all the athletes, parents and coaches. Congrats to all the Winners and Athletes for being true competitors. Videos are up on Sprongo and will be tagged soon. Our YSL Holiday camp was a huge success and thank you to everyone who attended the party and brought food and supplies.

U12 UPDATE-1-4-14
Hello PT/FT and Guest U12 parents,
WOW what a day today. We had almost 10 inches of snow fall between 4am and 4pm and we managed to get both GS runs in on time and I don’t think any of our kids missed a start all day and there was some incredible racing. Great Job to the coaches, athletes and parents for helping all day and having the kids on time and keeping them warm at the top and bottom of the hill. Congrats to all the winners and especially all the kids that are showing improvements every day we are on the hill. Those improvements really do matter.
Thanks for all the athletes who stayed for the awards, that was a HUGE crowd and good to see everyone cheer for SSCV and Steamboat athletes.
Sunday will be high in the single digits and low below 0 Deg F and windy. Please dress warm (extra layers, neck gator) and have your parents or coat runners take your clothes down for you. Bring a Heavy Long Coat for the start if you need to. I saw many kids with fogged up goggles, please have an extra set in your coat or bag at the start.
Thank you Trudeau family for providing the lunches for the coaches today who stayed on the hill all day and the Maffei family volunteered to provide lunches on Sunday….THANK YOU!

SSCV U12’s RECAP AND UPDATE FROM BOB ZUCH-1-1-13
Happy New Year!
RECAP:
Thank you to almost all of our athletes for showing up for all 5 days of training between Christmas and New Year’s! Your efforts will pay dividends; just be patient and continue practicing!
We have started introducing some elements of deliberate practice. This is what separates elite level athletes from everyone else. Deliberate practice is not always fun or comfortable, but it does keep the athlete in the “sweet spot” for maximum learning. This week we worked on slowing it down: “it’s not how fast you can do it; it’s how slowly you can do it correctly”. Practicing new skills slowly acts like a magnifying glass. Small imperfections become glaringly obvious. It can be discouraging at times, but in the end it’s very productive.
Each day we added another small piece of moving accurately to start our turns. We worked on releasing the downhill ski by moving to the little toe side of the boot. But before this can be done the previous turn must finish so the skis come back underneath your body. Then we worked on driving the downhill (or new inside) knee into the turn. This brings the skis onto their new edges and moves the hips forward. To do this slowly requires precision! The last two days your child’s mean coach videoed the group practicing starting their turns while skiing slowly, magnifying any weaknesses for their parents to see!
Luckily the kids got a good laugh, in addition to some honest feedback when watching the videos. The videos are at ¼ speed, and start with a demo by Stephanie Lebby in a NorAm race. Watch how she drives her downhill knee into the new turn while remaining balanced over her new outside ski.
A-E (first name): https://vimeo.com/83110359
K-T (first name): https://vimeo.com/83110358
Since tipping the downhill ski is scary and takes a lot of practice, you’ll see some examples of other movements: lifting the downhill ski, twisting the downhill ski, squeezing the feet together, stemming the uphill ski, pushing the uphill ski forward, and not pointing the downhill knee until later in the turn. All of these accomplish a turn, that’s why skiers do them… but often they result in too much weight on the inside ski with little or no edge angles. Our goal is to continue practicing so that everyone is moving accurately to start their turns, and can demonstrate this slowly!

U12 Part-Time Update-News from Brett Borgard-November 18, 2013
Hello PT Parents,
I know your athletes are itching to get on the hill this week, Gold Peak has been incredible for training/drills/freeskiing and Vail Mountain will be opened this weekend for the coaches and kids to ski. I have added some extra skiing sessions for Nov 29th-Dec 1st to keep your athletes on snow. I have added below the new sessions but please check the calendar for updates, times, ski discipline and notes.
Please make sure your athletes equipment is tuned and adjusted to new boots/bindings. Have your child bring neck gators, extra layers, goggles (light and dark lens), snacks, lunch or lunch money and water bottles to all training days. Please remember to arrive early and pick up your child on time.
For the first 2 days on snow I would like the kids to be on Slalom skis. We will be evaluating the athletes skiing ability the first couple days and then we will divide in 3 groups with like skiing ability. Our PT coaches for this season are Amie Bervy, Geof Ochs and Bob Zuch.
We can’t wait to see you this weekend!

U12 News from Brett Borgard-November 12, 2013
Hello FT Parents,
This past week has been a great one. Gold Peak Race Arena is in great shape due to the hard work and many early and late hours by our SSCV coaches and staff. The athletes are improving everyday and having fun doing it, sometimes along side National Ski Teams from around the world. I hope you have had a chance to see your athletes goal sheets and journals. I believe the kids understand what we are doing and why we are doing what we do on the hill when they write it down and talk to their primary coach about the drills and free skiing we get to do. Thanks for all your support and let your primary coaches know if you have any questions. They will be contacting you to have some one on one meetings in the next week.
