Ski & Snowboard Club Vail (SSCV) U12 alpine racers skied fast at the United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) Rocky Mountain Division U12 Championships at Powderhorn Mountain Resort this weekend, taking 1/3 of the top three podium spots across four boys and four girls single run races. The championship attracted 181 ten and eleven year-old boys and girls from the Rocky Mountain Division to compete in Slalom and Giant Slalom.
“Our athletes came well prepared this weekend to compete in a large field consisting of all U12 USSA racers in the region,” stated Brett Borgard, SSCV U12 Head Coach. “These young competitors were able to bring what they were learning on the training hill all season long to the race course, which is a huge part of success in this sport. This event gives every U12 USSA racer in the region the opportunity to experience a championship event.in a fun, teambuilding setting.”
Forty-three SSCV U12 athletes (21 girls and 22 boys) competed in the Rocky Mountain Division U12 Championships. The weekend consisted of a USSA SkillsQuest competition of pole jumpers and side edge slip drills along with two single run Giant Slalom races on Saturday and two single run Slalom races on Sunday. Tianna Bruce of SSCV tied for first place in the SkillsQuest competition.
WEEKEND HIGHLIGHTS
“These athletes performed spectacularly well. Since our last competition we have spent the past five weeks working on technique and tactics and it really paid off. We also did some intra-squad time trials and race simulations on our home mountain to further prepare the team for this weekend. I have seen tremendous improvements, which the athletes demonstrated through their accomplishments at these races,” stated Borgard. “A win for us as coaches is seeing our athletes progress throughout the season, while at the same time having fun. The Powderhorn U12 Championships allowed us to see both amidst a terrific weekend of racing.”
SSCV took home the 1st Place Overall Team Award for the U12 Rocky Mountain Division Championships.
