On the heels of Ski & Snowboard Club Vail’s Sylvan Ellefson’s back-to-back wins in Aspen this past weekend, the rest of SSCV’s Nordic team came away from the competition at Owl Creek with some strong finishes.

“We had some great results, and most importantly, some great fun,” said coach Dan Weiland.

Saturday and Sunday had many of the SSCV Nordic team cracking into the top ten for their respective age groups.

J5 Ian Hardenbergh scored a fourth, J3 Woody Scruggs had a fifth and a sixth place finish, and J3 Eric Zdechlik had a 10th.  J3 skiers Patrick Scruggs and Nolan Herzog scored a second and a fourth, respectively, J2 Callan Deline had a first and a second place, J4 Madeline Donovan skied to a second place, and J4 Lyle Shipp skied to a fifth.

Other top ten finishes for the team include a seventh and ninth place for J1 Christian Shanley, Andrew Zdechlik, a J2, scored an eighth, a ninth for J4 Gracie Shanley, Hannah Hardenbergh had a seventh for the J2s, J1 Katie Scruggs scored a seventh, and Sally Ryerson had a 10th for the J1 women.

This past weekend was also the Rocky Mountain Nordic Championships, and selections for the Junior Nationals were announced.  Based on the best four out of eight races, the deal was sealed for seven of SSCV’s Nordic skiers to head to the Nordic Junior Nationals being held in Minneapolis March 4 through the 13th.

“This is the first year that SSCV has an athlete represented in each age class and gender,” said  Weiland.

For the women, Hannah Hardenbergh, Sally Ryerson, and Katie Scruggs will be representing SSCV at the Junior Nationals for the first time in their careers.

Callan Deline and Andrew Zdechlik will head to the Junior Nationals for the first time, while veterans of the 2010 Junior Nationals, Max Burnell and Christian Shanley, qualified again this year.
