Winter Park ran four Super G races – two for the women and two for the men – on
Wednesday, and Mark Engel collected his third gold during this six race series on the
Surefoot tour.
The women kicked out of the start first for Super G racing and University of Colorado
athlete Katie Hartman won with a run of 1:01.50. Team Breckenridge’s Leah Canfield took
the silver in 1:01.88 and Ski & Snowboard Club Vail’s U.S. Ski Team member Abby Ghent
stopped the clock in 1:02.12 to place third. SSCV Alumna Erika Ghent finished on her
sister’s heels in forth with a 1:02.34.
SSCV’s women packed into the top 15 in the day’s first SG included Kaytlyn Samuelson
in sixth, Paula Moltzan seventh, Taylor Rapley ninth, Anne Strong in 12th, and Elizabeth
Strong in 14th.
AT 11:00 A.M., the women charged the track again and Leah Canfield took the win while
Katie Hartman crossed the finish in second and Abby Ghent took third.
SSCV’s Kaytlyn Samuelson and Paula Moltzan placed forth and fifth in the second race,
Taylor Rapley was eighth, Katharine Irwin took 9th, Celine Guilminea 10th, Elizabeth Strong
14th Anne Strong, 17th, and Mary Sackbauer finished 18th.
“It was a good track,” said SSCV coach Dan Stripp. “I’m pretty happy with these early
season results.”
Sugar Bowl Academy’s Mark Engel skied the men’s first Super G of the day in 1:01.41 to
his third gold in this Surefoot series in Steamboat and Winter Park. Behind Engel was
Steamboat’s Sam Glaisher in second place with a 1:01.49. Team Summit’s Mark Miller
took third with a 1:01.77.
Sean McCormick raced to eighth while his SSCV teammates Cannon O’Brien and Cristoph
Niederhauser finished 17th and 19th.
Super G number two for the men had France’s Gabriel Rivas in first, Sun Valley’s Tanner
Farrow in second, and Team Summit’s Mark Miller in third place.
SSCV men Sean McCormick, Cannon O’Brien, and Christoph Niederhauser finished
eighth, 17th, and 21st for the second Super G of the day.
“The guys skied well.” said coach Nick Asoian. “The track and the light were good today,
and the SSCV men were ready to race.”
