The freeskiing team of Ski & Snowboard Club Vail got their chance to compete on home turf this past Sunday, 2/19, with a USASA slopestyle competition on Golden Peak.

SSCV’s Aaron Blunck, bronze medal winner for the skier halfpipe at the 2012 Youth Olympics in Innsbruck, and Broby Leeds, recent winner of the skier halfpipe at the Free Flow Tour in Utah, were on hand to take their run at launching off the three jumps while performing acrobatic maneuvers as they fly through the air.

However, it was another SSCV athlete, John Leonard, that took the gold for the open skier men on this day, with Blunck in second and Leeds in third to sweep the podium for the team.

“They were all gunning for the win,” said coach Luke Allen.  “Blunck, Leeds, and Leonard all put it out there, and Leonard put down the run that earned him the win.”

For the10-12 year-old boys, SSCV’s Felix Coudouy snagged the silver with Duke Yard in fifth.

Cole Pates scored the team’s third silver on the day, with Cas Sheridan in fourth for the 13-15 year-old boys.

“The event was well attended, and we hope to host more USASA competitions in the future,” said Allen.

The next stop for the freeskiing team is the Aspen Open, February 24 through the 26th.
